About Shiny Gear

We're journalists, writers, and editors dedicated to the craft of storytelling.

Our Story

Shiny Gear was founded in 2013 by Sarah Mitchell, a veteran journalist who spent fifteen years working for major Canadian newspapers and international magazines. After years in traditional newsrooms, Sarah recognized a gap in the market: talented writers and organizations needed expert guidance, but traditional training programs were either too academic or too superficial.

What started as weekend workshops in a Toronto community center has grown into a full-service journalism consultancy. We've expanded our team to include specialists in investigative reporting, feature writing, editorial strategy, and content development. Despite our growth, we've maintained the personal approach that defined those early workshops.

Today, we serve clients across Canada and internationally, from major publications to independent journalists, from corporate communications teams to nonprofit organizations. Our work has been featured in dozens of prominent publications, and we've helped launch the careers of numerous successful journalists.

Our Approach

Research-Driven

Every piece starts with thorough research. We dig deep into topics, verify sources, and build comprehensive understanding before writing begins. This foundation ensures accuracy and depth in the final product.

Audience-Centered

We always consider who will read the piece and what they need to know. Whether writing for specialized industry audiences or general readers, we tailor our approach to match their expectations and knowledge level.

Iterative Process

Great writing emerges through revision. We build in multiple rounds of editing, fact-checking, and refinement. Our clients are involved throughout, ensuring the final piece matches their vision while meeting professional standards.

Ethical Framework

We adhere to established journalism ethics codes, including guidelines from the Canadian Association of Journalists. This means transparent sourcing, balanced reporting, and respect for subject privacy where appropriate.

Why Journalism Matters

In an era of information overload, quality journalism has never been more important. Well-researched, carefully written articles cut through noise and provide the context people need to understand complex issues. They hold powerful institutions accountable, give voice to underrepresented communities, and create shared understanding across diverse audiences.

We believe the fundamental skills of journalism—research, verification, clear writing, ethical consideration—are valuable far beyond traditional news organizations. Businesses, nonprofits, and individuals all benefit from applying these principles to their communications.

Our work exists at the intersection of traditional journalism values and modern content needs. We help ensure that important stories are told well, that facts are verified, and that readers receive information they can trust.
